Hob Knobbing with Island Artists

The Vineyard art community came out to celebrate on Friday,October 24 as The Hob Knob unveiled both its "Art of Hob Knobbing" cultural series and an original sculpture by Island artist Steve Lohman. A special gallery exhibit by Vineyard photographer Alison Shaw, displaying selected works from her summer 2008 Red, Yellow, Blue, Green Black and White shows, was another of the evening's highlights. Mini-sculptures and limited edition prints signed by the artists were available for purchase, with a percentage of proceeds going to benefit The Farm Institute.

Around Town: Scarecrows from the Sea

Vineyarders are used to seeing familiar faces downtown and around town but in the weeks prior to Halloween, some surprises are to be expected. This year as in year's past, the MV Public Charter School's annual scarcrow contest added a few characters to the sidewalk scene. The 2008 theme focused on the sea and, for the first time in the contest's history, the community was invited to participate in the creation of the scarecrows. These are some of the new neighbors encountered on a walk in Vineyard Haven.

Backstage: Mrs. Miller Does Her Thing

Join MVOL.com backstage with the cast of Mrs Miller Does Her Thing, opening at the Vineyard Playhouse on September 18. The hopes are that this sly musical wink at the 1960s will follow the same trajectory as Dirty Blonds, which debuted at the Playhouse then went on to win five Tony Awards on Broadway. With the weekend, the Fair draws more people than ever. Lines get a little longer but the milling crowds just make the day more fun. Folks stop and talk, packs of kids, some of whom have become expert from earlier visits, introduce friends to favorite rides and games. Popular events such as the Woodsman's contest draw cheering crowds. Having fun is easy at the Fair.

Agricultural Fair 2008 Pet Show

The first day of the 147th Martha's Vineyard Agricultural Fair dawned bright and beautiful, providing the perfect backdrop for one of the event's most popular competitions, the Pet Show. Kids and their furry friends brought smiles all round, getting the Fair off to a happy and exciting start.
