Walking/Running
Where: StateBeach, OB/Edg
Best feature: Beautiful as are all Island beaches, this walk has the added attraction of easy accessibility and versatility. Park your car roadside or, if space is available, in either of the two small parking areas where the Beach Road emerges from Harthaven and a bridge marks the border between OB and Edgartown. Head toward Edgartown on the soft sand that provides an exceptionally good work-out for the legs. When you run out of beach at Bend in the Road, cross the road carefully and head back to your car on the bike path that follows the shoreline of Sengekontacket Pond. Two kinds of walking, two water views…one great workout. Amazing at sunrise.

Swimming
Where: Lamberts Cove Beach, Tisbury
Best feature: Though, or maybe because, it is open to the public only after 5 pm during the summer, Lambert’s Cove Beach is a great choice for serious swimmers. On the Island’s protected northwest face, wave action is minimal, so laps are easily accomplished. The only downside is the lack of a lifeguard so exercise caution and bring a friend.

Biking
Where: Bike Path linking OB & Edgartown
Best feature: This 6-mile path has several: beautiful scenery along Nantucket Sound and an ocean breeze to boot; a beach, should you need a quick dip; towns at either end for refreshment, terrain that is almost totally flat and the VTA bus which will give you and your bike a ride back, just in case. In-season extra: Showers at the Oak Bluffs beach and in the rest station at the harbor next to Our Market.

Kayaking/Canoing
Where: Lagoon Pond, Vineyard Haven
Best feature: Boat launch off the Beach Road just before the drawbridge makes for easy parking and access. Though tidal, the Lagoon is protected on all sides, so the effect of ocean waves is minimal. At the entrance to Lagoon, Wind’s Up provides rentals and instruction for beginners.
